Friesland is the only one of the twelve provinces of the Netherlands to have its own language that is recognized as such, West Frisian. For over half of the inhabitants of the province of Friesland, 55% (ca. 354,000 people), Frisian is the native language. Most of the other inhabitants are native speakers of Dutch. West Frisian is also spoken in a small adjacent part of the province of Groningen. Closely related languages are spoken in nearby areas of Germany.
