Blokker (Dutch Retail Chain)

Blokker is a Dutch chain of household goods stores in the Netherlands and Suriname. On April 25, 1896, Jacob Blokker and his wife Saapke Kuiper founded The cheap iron and wood shop in Hoorn. The shop, at Breed 22, grew rapidly and Blokker expanded at Breed with several buildings, including number 12.

In 1923, an old building on the corner of the Breed and the Veemarkt was bought, in which a capital retail property appeared before that time. This branch moved to a building on the Gouw in Hoorn in 2016. From the 1930s their four sons opened various other stores in the Randstad under the name Gebroeders Blokker. This tradition was continued by their descendants, as a result of which Blokker developed into a national and international retail chain.
In 2020, Blokker announced that all their stores in Belgium and Luxembourg will be sold to Dutch Retail Group owned by entrepreneur Dirk Bron, who wanted to continue all stores as discounters under the name Mega World. Only eight of the 123 stores in Belgium and Luxembourg were profitable. This could not change the financial situation and the same year the court declared Mega World bankrupt.

Blokker had two distribution centers in the Netherlands, in Geldermalsen and Gouda. The largest distribution center is in Geldermalsen and, with an area of 90,000 m², was one of the largest in Europe. The distribution center in Geldermalsen was intended for the daily supply of all Blocker branches in the Netherlands, Belgium and Suriname. The distribution center in Gouda was closed in 2019. Until 2015, another logistics center was located in Houten. Until 2018, there was also a distribution center in Mijdrecht for the supply of seasonal items and toys. Department store chain Hudson’s Bay had taken over this distribution center.
