Brabantse Biesbosch, The Netherlands

The Brabantse Biesbosch forms the largest part of the Biesbosch, which also includes the Hollandse Biesbosch. It is located between the Nieuwe Merwede, the Amer and the Land van Heusden and Altena and has an area of 3,638 ha. The Brabantse Biesbosch is owned by the Staatsbosbeheer (Forestry Commission).

The Brabantse Biesbosch is a wet area or wetland, where large groups of water birds find cover, food and nesting facilities. By reclaiming and digging open polders, a freshwater swamp with an enormous diversity of species is gradually developing. It is a beautiful area for both nature and recreational opportunities. Ideal for walking, cycling or a boat or canoe trip through it.

The Brabantse Biesbosch consists of two parts. The North and South side. The Noordwaard is mainly an agricultural area. De Zuidwaard has many nature and recreational opportunities, but can only be reached by water. The Brabantse Biesbosch includes the Polder Hooge Hof, Catharinapolder, Polder Jantjesplaat, Catharina plates, Buisjes ”, Beneden- en Boven Spieningpolder and Polder Maltha. Only accessible by water is the Noorderplaat, Doktershoek, Polder Peatzak, Polder Kwestieus, Polder Noorderplaat, Polder de Plomp, Sint Jansplaat, Hofmansplaat and Toontjesplaat. The Aakvlaai and the Kurenpolder are close to Hank.
