The Prins Hendrikbrug (Frisian: Prins Hindrikbrêge) is a permanent bridge in the center of the Frisian capital Leeuwarden. The bridge is named after Prince Hendrik van Oranje-Nassau, nicknamed Prince Hendrik the Navigator, (1820-1879), the younger brother of King Willem III. The bridge spans the Zuiderstadsgracht and connects the Prins Hendrikstraat, on the north side, with Sophialaan, on the south side. Immediately north and south of the bridge, the Willemskade Noordzijde and Zuidzijde, which follow the canal, cross the Prins Hendrikstraat, resp. the Sophialaan. The original Prince Hendrik Bridge was built in 1869. When Prince Hendrik the Navigator traveled to Leeuwarden that year to inspect the construction, the city council took the opportunity to ask for his permission to name the bridge after him.
