Coolsingel (Rotterdam, The Netherlands)

Coolsingel is one of the best known streets in central Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It is located in the Cool district. The street leads from the Hofplein to the Churchillplein. Since the reconstruction, the Coolsingel has been the central artery of the city center. The Coolsingel connects the Hofplein with the Blaak. It is also a shopping boulevard.

In 1480 there was already talk of the canal (Dutch: singel) opposite the vest behind Bulgersteyn, later called Coolsingel. The canal is completely filled in due to the construction of a wide traffic road in the years 1913-1922. Until the damping of the water it was known as the Coolvest; it formed the western boundary of the old City Triangle.

The Rotterdam town hall is located on the Coolsingel, as well as the former main post office, the Rotterdam tourist office, the Bijenkorf and C&A. In front of the Bijenkorf stands the monument The stylized flower (nicknamed Het Ding or De Stopnaald) by Naum Gabo. On the south side, the Coolsingel is closed by the Churchillplein (former Van Hogendorpsplein). On the other side, next to the Maritime Museum, is Plein 1940 where the famous monument The Destroyed City (nicknamed Jan Gat) by Ossip Zadkine is located.

On the corner Beursplein / Coolsingel is the Beurs World Trade Center Rotterdam (WTC Rotterdam), the business heart of Rotterdam. Various RET trams run across the Coolsingel, the metro runs underneath. The metro stations Stadhuis and Beurs are also located under the Coolsingel. The Beurstraverse shopping passage, popularly known as the Koopgoot, runs underneath the Coolsingel. The Coolsingel is the meeting point for popular expressions of great joy. For example, Feyenoord championships are usually celebrated on the Coolsingel, and in good weather sometimes in the fountain on the Hofplein. The start and finish of the Rotterdam Marathon and the Summer Carnival Rotterdam will also take place on Coolsingel. It is also the finish of the Roparun.
