Jacobus den Hartogh made his first trip in 1920 with a rented motor barge from Hillegom via De Kaag to Leiden in The Netherlands. The barge was bought quickly. A horse and wagon, a T-Ford truck and three Ford V8 trucks soon followed. After the Second World War there was hardly anything left about the fleet, but the company received a Fordson and a GMC from the Dutch government. After that, all sorts of companies were taken over for decades, so that the company gets more and more permits for different scheduled services.

In the 1970’s, the future of the company lay in tank and bulk transport. The company traditionally transports bulk goods such as flower bulbs, sugar beets and shortly after the war also milk in large tanks. Den Hartogh started specializing in chemicals, because there was a flourishing chemical industry in Rotterdam. The first chemical tankwagen was purchased in 1970. Halfway through the 1980s, the company had 15 bulk trailers for the transport of granulates and powders, and more than 150 tank trailers for the transport of a wide range of chemicals and foodstuffs.

In 2020 (100 years after the company was founded) Den Hartogh had 20.000 tank containers, 6.500 dry bulk containers, 400 tank trailers and more than 600 trucks, Logistic Service Centers in Indonesia, Thailand and Rotterdam, it was active in 23 countries at 42 locations and had more than 1.700 employees worldwide. From 1997 to 2016 Den Hartogh had a Ford Museum in Hillegom, The Netherlands.
