Didi (Fashion Chain) in The Netherlands

Ladies fashion brand Didi was founded in the 1970s by the Amsterdam entrepreneur Rattan Chadha. After Chadha became more and more involved with Mexx, and managed to amass a fortune with it, he sold Didi in 1981 to Coltex, the fashion company of the North Holland textile family Alsace. Thanks to a striking and varied collection, the family succeeded in expanding Didi into a chain that at its peak had one hundred and fifty stores.

The rise of online shopping and the credit crisis (2007-2011) caused a turnaround. The choice of the retail family to divest other formulas such as Superstar and Forecast and to concentrate on Didi ultimately yielded insufficient results. In 2017, a loss of 4.4 million was recorded on a turnover of 47 million. Nevertheless, until 2019, the management still looked to the future with confidence. The introduction of loyalty cards and a modernization of the stores had had a positive effect on the figures, director Yasha Elzas said in an interview with a trade magazine.

The brand was declared bankrupt in early 2020. Years of loss and declining turnover appear to be the cause. Despite positive signs after the bankruptcy order, a restart turned out not to be possible. The bankruptcy involved 81 stores and nearly five hundred employees.
