Mavrovo Lake, North Macedonia

Mavrovo Lake (Macedonian: Мавровско Езеро, Mavrovsko ezero) is situated in the Mavrovo region of the Republic of North Macedonia, less than 100 km from Skopje. Abundant with trout, Lake Mavrovo is used for recreational activities such as swimming, boating and fishing during the summer. An additional point of interest is the half-submerged church in the lake.

Mavrovo Lake is the biggest artificial lake in Macedonia. It is dating from 1953 when it was created with the construction of a dam at the west side of the valley. It is located on 1232 metres above sea level where once three great rivers merged creating the Mavrovo River. The lake is 10 kilometres long and 3 kilometres wide with a maximum dept of 50 metres covering an area of 13.7 km2.
