Monastery Of Kališta (North Macedonia)

The Kališta monastery complex – Holy Mother is located in the village of Kališta (30 km from the town of Ohrid, North Macedonia) on the western edge of Lake Ohrid, toward Albania. It hosts one of the most important church in the rock of Lake Ohrid.

Central place in the Kališta monastery complex takes the new church Holy Mother of God, renovated in 1977 (over an older 17th century church). There a very important icon is kept, where the Holy Mother of God is painted with Black face and clothing, holding in her hands the Black Jesus. The oldest part of the Kališta monastery is an cave church, built in the 13th century, deep into a rock. Close to the Holy Mother of God church is the other smaller church dedicated to Saint Peter and Paul (built in 1990).
