The members of the Eerste Kamer en Tweede Kamer represent the Dutch voters. They are therefore called the representatives of the people. The two most important tasks of the Tweede Kamer are: making new laws together with the government and checking whether the government is doing its job properly. The Tweede Kamer also plays an important role in policy making. The main task of the Eerste Kamer is to approve or reject bills. In addition, the Senate has the task of monitoring the government.

The Tweede Kamer has two main tasks: to monitor the government and to make laws. The main task of the Eerste Kamer is to assess bills that have been approved by the Tweede Kamer. The Eerste Kamer makes only limited use of the right to control the government. The two Houses together form the Staten-Generaal (States General; Parliament). The government is obliged to inform both Houses. In this way, the Chambers can properly control the government. This information obligation is laid down in the Constitution.

The prime minister, the ministers and the secretaries of state together form the cabinet. The Prime Minister is the leader of the cabinet and he chairs the cabinet every week. The cabinet makes policy and is responsible for it. The parties that participate in the government are called the coalition parties. The parties that are not in the government are the opposition parties. They are, as it were, opposed to the government or coalition parties.
