Protestantism in The Netherlands

Protestantism is one of the four major branches of Christianity, alongside Roman Catholicism, the Eastern Orthodox Churches and Anglicanism. The movement arose after teachings and practices in the medieval Catholic Church in Western Europe began to provoke resistance from within. The reaction that this provoked, which began in the early 16th century, has come to be known as the Reformation.

The doctrines of Protestant denominations may differ much or little, but most adhere to this threefold critique of the Roman Church:

1) Sola fide, man can be saved from his sins only through faith in Jesus Christ.
2) Sola gratia, only by grace can man be saved.
3) Sola scriptura, only through the Scriptures (the Bible) does God make himself known to man.

Two additional propositions Solus Christus (Only Jesus Christ) and Soli Deo gloria (Only Glory to God) complete the Protestant teachings into the so-called five solas.

In the 16th century, the followers of Martin Luther established the Evangelical Lutheran churches of Germany and Scandinavia. Reformed churches in Switzerland and France were established by John Calvin and more radical reformers such as Huldrych Zwingli. Thomas Cranmer reformed the Anglican Church and John Knox later established a more radical Calvinist commune in the Church of Scotland.

Protestantism consists of many different movements. Unlike in the Roman Catholic Church, there is no central authority that determines the teachings of the Protestant denominations. In the past, this has led to a large number of separations at national and international level. An example is the creation in 2004 of the Hersteld Hervormde Kerk and the Continued Reformed Churches in the Netherlands, which split off from the Dutch Reformed Church and the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands when these denominations merged with the Evangelical Lutheran Church into the Protestant Church in the Netherlands. Some of the Protestant denominations are international, although most are organized into rural denominations.
