Railway Stations in Gelderland, The Netherlands

In 1845 the Rhine railway from Amsterdam, via Utrecht to Arnhem, was completed, which was extended to Germany a decade later. To this end, English engineers built the first Dutch railway bridge (a swing bridge) across a large river at Westervoort. The connecting railway from Arnhem to Zutphen was opened in 1865; this also connected the municipality of Rheden to the Dutch railway network.

In 1887 the Apeldoorn-Dieren railway line was opened, the so-called “Koning Willem III line” of the Royal Dutch Local Railway Company “Koning Willem III” (KNLS). The KNLS was merged into the Nederlandsche Spoorwegen in 1921. The station in Dieren was called “Dieren-Doesburg” for a long time because of the fast connection with nearby Doesburg. In 1881, Geldersche Stoomtram Maatschappij opened its first (tram) line from Dieren via Doetinchem to Gendringen. In September 1944, the old station building of Dieren was hit by a British plane bomb and completely destroyed. Since then, the platform building has been used as a station building. Since 1975, Dieren station has been the terminus of the Apeldoorn-Dieren tourist railway of the “Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij” (VSM). Dieren currently fulfills a regional function thanks to its station and its location along the IJssel and at a crossroads of roads (Arnhem-Zutpen and Apeldoorn-Doetinchem).

The Nijkerk – Ede-Wageningen railway line is the railway line that runs between the branch of the Amersfoort – Apeldoorn railway at Barneveld Noord, and Ede-Wageningen, or in relation to train services: the Amersfoort Central – Ede-Wageningen line. The line from the branch is the remainder of the former local railway between Nijkerk harbor via Nijkerk to Ede. In 1951 the railway was electrified. The length of the entirely single-track railway is approximately 17 km, a distance that the train takes more than 20 minutes. Most of the yards along the single-track line are now a thing of the past and trains can only cross at Barneveld Centrum and Lunteren stations. The railway is also popularly called the “Kippenlijn” (=Chicken Line). The railway owes this nickname to the center for poultry farming Barneveld, from where chickens and eggs used to be shipped by rail.
