Rooftop events were not a novelty for Rotterdam, but in 2022 more people than ever could visit the city’s ‘roofscape’.In addition to the annual festival of the same name, Rotterdam Rooftop Days presented the Rotterdam Rooftop Walk, a route that spanned several roofs in the city center and connected iconic buildings on the Coolsingel.The design is a collaboration with MVRDV Architects.

For a month (from 26 May to 24 June 2022), visitors could cross a specially designed skybridge over the city’s most famous street. In addition to the view, visitors could experience how innovative roof use could contribute to a better future for cities and urban dwellers worldwide.In 2022, Rotterdam had more than 18 km2 of roof landscape, which was largely unused.

Together with the municipality of Rotterdam and other partners, the organization presented this major event next to their existing rooftop festival.Companies and NGOs showed their latest roof innovations in the fields of green roofs, energy transition, water retention, roofs as public space and more.Together with contributions from the arts and sciences, these formed a manifestation of innovative roof use and a vision of a possible future for cities that make the most of their roof landscape.
