Traditionally, freshwater fishing (salmon, allis shad, twaite shad) was an important branch of activity in the Dutch fortified town of Woudrichem. Not only the coat of arms of Woudrichem, but also that of the surrounding Land van Altena bears two salmons. As late as 1875 the progress in the condition of the needy class was attributed to improved fishing.

In the 1950s, this livelihood disappeared due to pollution of the rivers. There was also agriculture (potatoes, sugar beets, oats, rye) and dairy farming. There was also horticulture (apples, pears, strawberries, vegetables). Industrial activity was limited to traditional crafts and a single basketry workshop. The fish canning industry emerged from fishing: Around 1920, the company Wijnbelt & Co started as a freshwater fish trade and at the end of the 1930s, this company started the fish canning factory Wylax International B.V.. Later this became part of the British Linton Park plc. The factory was permanently closed in 2020.

Flour mill Nooit Gedagt on the Rijkswal is the only octagonal stone scaffolding corn mill in the Netherlands. The mill is still in operation every day to produce flour products for consumers, retail and large-scale consumers. The flour mill produces according to HACCP guidelines and is affiliated with the Artisan Flour Millers Guild. A well-stocked mill shop has been set up in the mill for private individuals, with an assortment of more than 200 flour and regional products.

From 1970, tourism would take an increasing place, because of the now restored historic fortified town and water sports. There are few shops in the fortress of Woudrichem. The weekly market takes place every Thursday afternoon on ‘t Rond (outside the fortress) from 13:00 to 17:00.
