In 1934/1935 Abel Slippens started as an independent entrepreneur. As an agent for Romi margarine from manufacturer Zwerver from Vlaardingen, he traveled by train and bus to the south of the Netherlands to sell to grocers, the wholesaler and the margarine processing industry. The name of the company became Slippens Groothandel in Koloniale Waren (Slippens Wholesale Colonial Goods). In addition to the margarine, articles were also sold that came from the colonies: sugar, rice, tropical fruits and spices.
During the Second World War, the trade in colonial goods came to a complete standstill. Despite this, the company’s turnover increased because there was more demand for margarine. The range grew due to the supply of replacement products (so-called surrogates). After the war in the 1940s, the range was expanded thanks to renewed production.

In 1957 Abel Slippens died and his sons took over the company. Together they started a cash and carry wholesaler in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, where customers could view the range themselves, buy and take them directly. The concept proved to be a success and formed the basis for expansion: similar locations in Veghel, Helmond, Valkenswaard, Eindhoven and Weert soon followed. During this period the name of Slippens Groothandel in Koloniale Waren was shortened to Sligro. Sales increased by 25% and 40% on an annual basis.
Strong growth followed in the 1970s and 1980s through more than 100 acquisitions. One of the most important strategic acquisitions was that of Louwers in Eindhoven, enabling the company to focus more on fresh products for the catering industry. In 1992, the first catering wholesaler was added to Sligro with the takeover of the Arnhem family business Wunderink. As a result of the tightened Dutch laws regarding sales via the cash and carry system, the number of companies in the sector fell in about 25 years from 400 to about 25 companies, all of which were potential takeover candidates for Sligro.

In 2006, Sligro set up a consortium with Sperwer, S&S Shops. Sligro and Sperwer together bought the EDAH from Laurus. The EDAHs that belong to Sligro have been converted into EMTÉ Supermarkten and Golff Supermarkten. A year later, the Meermarkt and Attent supermarkets were transferred to the Spar holding. At the beginning of 2001, Sligro took over the Prisma Food Group. Prisma Food Retail was active as a wholesaler in foodstuffs, to which in 2018 approximately 300 independent supermarket entrepreneurs were affiliated with the Golff (57 branches), MeerMarkt (70 branches) and Attent (54 branches) retail formulas. In 2018, Sligro Food Group sold its shares to the consortium of Coop and Jumbo Groep Holding.
