Total in The Netherlands

Total is a French multinational oil and gas company, founded in 1924 and one of the seven “supermajors” within the oil companies. Its activities span the entire oil and gas chain, from the exploration and production of petroleum and natural gas to power generation, transportation, refining, marketing of petroleum products and international trade of crude oil and products. TotalEnergies is also a large-scale producer of chemicals.

Raymond Poincaré, who had again become prime minister of France in 1922, asked industrialist Ernest Mercier to lead the Compagnie Française des Pétroles (CFP) in 1923. CFP became a private company, but the government did have an important say in the composition of the board. The interest in Turkish Petroleum was transferred to CFP. In 1928, a state commission came to the conclusion that a greater interest in this important market would have served the French government. She took a 25% equity stake in CFP. The working area of the company remained mainly the Middle East.

In 1985 the name was changed to Total-CFP and in 1991 CFP disappeared from the name and it became only Total. In 1999, Total took over the Belgian company Petrofina, creating Total Fina. Later, the French Elf merged with Total, leading to the name TotalFinaElf. In 2003 the name was changed again to Total.
In May 2014, Total was the first company to purchase offshore Arctic oil. This oil entered the port of Rotterdam under protest from Greenpeace. The environmental organizations point out the great risks that this Arctic oil entails. Because of all the commotion, Total has decided not to take any more oil from the Arctic. In June 2021, Total announced that it would change its name. In June 2021, Total announced that it would change its name. The new name became TotalEnergies.

In the Netherlands, TotalEnergies has a refinery in Vlissingen-Oost. This refinery has a processing capacity of 147,000 barrels per day, and TotalEnergies has a 55% stake. The remaining 45% of the shares have been held since mid-2009 by the Russian oil company LUKoil, through its subsidiary Litasco, based in Geneva. Since then, the refinery in Vlissingen-Oost has been operating under the name “Zeeland Refinery”. TotalEnergies is also a partner in the Maasvlakte Oil Terminal, and the company has various production platforms in the North Sea, and offices in The Hague and Den Helder. In September 2007, Total was discredited for investing in the oppressed country of Myanmar. During this period, protests by Buddhist monks and civilians had erupted in the country concerned. In the Netherlands, the political parties SP and PvdA called for a boycott of Total gas stations.
