Tourism in De Betuwe, The Netherlands

The Gelderland river landscape, which is formed by the Waal, Nederrijn, Lek and Linge, determines the Betuwe. The Amsterdam-Rhine Canal also crosses the region. The Betuwe is best known for its large-scale horticulture, especially fruit cultivation (apples, pears, cherries and plums). The cause of this land use lies in the geology and soil conditions of the region. Fertile river clay is found in the soil in almost the entire Betuwe.

The landscape in the Betuwe is always different. The dike landscape along the Linge with many fruit orchards plays an important role. Then there is the white cherry, plum and pear blossom, then pink apple blossom and later in the year the fruit follows with the harvest. The many orchards, fruit shops and the Fruit Parade in Tiel in the second weekend of September, testify every year that the Betuwe can rightly call itself the fruit garden of the Netherlands. Especially in the spring, when the trees are in full bloom, the Betuwe is at its most beautiful. The Appeldijkje, with old standard apple trees, is best known for its blossom.
