Tourism in Woudrichem, The Netherlands

The Dutch fortified town of Woudrichem, or Woerkum, as the inhabitants say, is the only town of the Biesbosch line. In the 9th century a market place was created on a levee. Today, this is where Hoogstraat and Molenstraat intersect. This place is still the heart of the fortified city.

The fortress of Woudrichem is small and therefore perfect for exploring on foot. The center of the historic core is formed by the Sint-Martinuskerk. Opposite the church is the fishing museum of Woudrichem. Other places of interest in the town are Gevangenpoort (Prison Gate), the windmill Nooit Gedacht, the historic marina, the fortifications, the Old Town Hall and the Johannes Nepomuk Church. Woudrichem also has several old houses, including a number of houses with a Dordrecht facade, such as In de Salamander (1609), In den Gulden Engel (1593), In ‘t Hert (1601) and In den vergulden Helm (1601). Most of these houses are located in Hoogstraat and Kerkstraat.

Woudrichem is located at the place where the Afdamde Maas merges with the Waal and continue together as the Merwede. This creates a unique piece of nature around the city. The Groesplaat nature reserve is particularly popular with tourists. This area is home to semi-feral Icelandic horses and Galloway cattle. At high tide, parts of the plate can be submerged. From Woudrichem it is also possible to visit Slot Loevestein via a foot ferry.

Ascension Day is the day of the annual National Fish Baking Competition. On that day, countless visitors enjoy salmon and gurnard, which are fried on fire devils on the street. Shanty choirs, stalls and a fair complete the party. Once a year, Woudrichem changes into the old fishing town of yesteryear. The authentic fishing fleet makes an appearance, and the fortress is filled with demonstrations of old crafts and fishing techniques. There are also rowing competitions on the Maas and fishing choirs in the street.
