The current Sint-Martinuskerk dates back to the 15th century, built as a late Gothic cruciform church with a pseudo-basilical nave and wooden barrel vaults. The choir is slightly older. In 1573, the church was almost completely destroyed by fire—only the walls remained. Thanks to contributions from various Dutch cities, reconstruction was completed in 1621. The tower, about 34 meters high, is richly decorated with stonework, including diamond-shaped and round medallions with carved heads and a frieze with shell motifs in early Renaissance style (c. 1530). A storm in 1717 destroyed the tower’s spire. Since then, it has remained “stump-like” and in 1933 received a balustrade—earning the nickname “The Mustard Pot.”
